Create Your Account
Go to https://twitter.com/signup and enter your details.
Choosing your name is an important step in this process. People may well search for your business on Twitter so to be found it is better to use your business name for both your Full name and your username.
Be aware that you can change your Full name later but you can’t change your username. It may also be the case that the username you want is already taken, so think carefully about alternatives. You may want to use your actual name in Full Name, but use your business name as your username.
Don’t use a username which is too long. In Twitter language people will use your username to message and mention you. (For example @tashaharrison.) With a limited number of characters you don’t want to use them all up with your username.
Twitter will send you a confirmation email. Click on the link in the email to confirm your account.
Following People
Once you have completed the sign up process you will need to start following people. Twitter will suggest some of the most high profile and followed accounts.
It is a good idea to follow some of these, but it is also important to make sure you’re following people you know too. It is from people you know that you will start to get the most value out of Twitter.
Your Timeline
When you login to Twitter you will see a timeline with the latest tweets from the people you follow. This is the main space on Twitter, much like your Facebook timeline.
Setting Up Your Profile Page
The next step is to upload a profile picture and a header image and tell people who you are and what you’re going to be talking about.
Click on your name or username to take you to your profile page as highlighted below.
Once on your Twitter profile page click on Edit Profile.
You can now upload your profile picture, header image and fill in your description, location and put a link to your website.
Your profile picture is how people will identify you, so it is important to use something memorable. If your account is to be exclusively for your business use your logo.
The header photo is an opportunity to tell people about your products, so an iconic product shot is a good idea, but think about the shape of it – the image is a letterbox.
